The Great Women Role Models of Islam

Women are the nurturers. Many great men of all time have been fostered by women. The role of women in a society is momentous, being the originator of mankind. Children’s first role model and inspiration is their mother. If she is pious, has a love for the Creator, and prostrates in front of Allah the Almighty, these actions get infused in the child. That is why women have played a prime role in spreading the word of Allah SWT throughout the history of Islam.

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH has mentioned these great women as

Anas Radhi-Allahu’anhu reports that Nabi Sallaahuhau’alya hi wasallam has said: “From among the women of the world who have reached perfection and who are worthy of following are the following four: Miryam the daughter of Imram; Khadija, daughter of Khuwailid; “Fatima, daughter of Muhammad and Asiyah wife of Fir’aun” (Tirmidhi)

Let’s review what lessons can be learned from them.

Khadija (RA)

A wise, gentle, intelligent, and influential lady also called as Tahira. She was an embodiment of unconditional support and faith. Khadija inherited the vast wealth of her father after his death and managed it successfully. Despite being an exceptionally rich woman, Khadija was never proud or pompous but rather a humble lady who used to assist her family and feed the poor. She is a perfect role model for all rich women.

After the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was blessed with prophethood, Khadija was a constant support to him emotionally and financially. Prophet Muhammad PBUH said about his beloved wife:

“The best of the world’s women was Mary (in her lifetime), and the best of the world’s women was Khadijah (in her lifetime). [Bukhari]

Fatima (RA)

A paradigm of virtue, piety, sacrifice, and humility, Fatima (RA) is the daughter of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and the only child who survived him. She was an excellent daughter and a loyal wife. She was a keen helper of the needy and poor to the extent that, despite her personal needs, she used to give all the food to the needy and would remain hungry herself.

The love Prophet Muhammad PBUH had for her daughter can be perceived from the hadith:

“Fatimah is a part of me, and he who makes her angry makes me angry.” [Bukhari]

Maryam (RA)

The Quran mentions one of the best women on the face of the earth and a role model for women of all ages in the form of Maryam (RA). She was a woman of impeccable character and a genuine devotee to Allah SWT. She bore Hazrat Isa (AS) without a father by Allah’s decree and had to face many accusations and blame, yet she remained steadfast and displayed immense faith in Allah SWT.

The Quran declares Maryam’s devotion and obedience to Allah SWT in the following lines:

“And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of ‘Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.” [Qur’an: Chapter 66, Verse 12]

Asiya (RA)

A lady who was given sheer respect and grand stature in Islam is Asiya (RA) despite being the wife of Pharaoh. She nurtured Hazrat Musa (AS) and proved to be a loving and selfless mother to him. In spite of being in a relationship with Pharaoh and all her wealth, she accepted the truth and stood firm on it. She willingly gave up all luxuries for a much more beautiful and lasting thing that was being closer to Allah SWT.

The Quran mentions Asiya in the following words:

“And Allah has set forth an example for those who believe, the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, ‘My Lord! Build for me a home with You in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his work, and save me from the people who are Zalimum (polytheists, wrong-doers, and disbelievers in Allah).’ [Quran: Chapter 66, Verse 11]
