Torment of the Grave Explained Through Quran and Hadith

The Barzakh: A World Between Two Worlds
The word “barzakh” in Arabic means “a barrier” or “a partition.” Every soul that departs this dunya enters it immediately and remains there until the Day of Resurrection. No living person can see into it or report back from it. Allah Himself describes this realm in Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:100):
“Behind them is a barrier (barzakh) until the day they are resurrected.”

The Three Questions No One Can Escape
According to narrations in both Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, two angels named Munkar and Nakir come to every person shortly after burial. They ask three questions that every soul must answer:
- Who is your Lord?
- What is your religion?
- Who is this man, referring to the Prophet PBUH?
A believer who lives with awareness and taqwa answers without hesitation. His grave is widened and filled with light, and he rests in peace until the Day of Resurrection. The one who was heedless cannot find the words, and the grave closes in until his ribs lock together.
“The grave is either a garden from the gardens of Paradise or a pit from the pits of the Fire.” (Tirmidhi)
The Everyday Sins That Invite Punishment
One of the most sobering narrations in Bukhari tells us that the Prophet PBUH passed by two graves and said the people inside were being punished. What is striking is that he then said it was not for something major. One did not guard oneself from urine. The other spread tales between people. Both are habits that most people dismiss entirely.
Other narrations consistently name these as causes of Torment of the Grave:
- Neglecting Salah or praying without the presence of heart
- Backbiting and carrying tales between people
- Consuming haram wealth or food knowingly
- Arrogance and indifference toward the rights of others
- Dying while attached to shirk without repentance
What Shields a Believer in the Grave
The same tradition that warns us also gives us practical shields. The Prophet PBUH said that Surah Al-Mulk, recited consistently every night, intercedes for its reciter and protects against the punishment of the grave. Dying on a Friday, dying as a shaheed, and departing this world in a state of sincere tawbah are also mentioned across authentic narrations as means of protection.
