Who is Dajjal? Understanding the Greatest Trial before the Day of Judgment
There are very few subjects in Islamic eschatology that carry the weight this one does. Scholars across centuries have written about it; the Prophet—peace be upon him—warned about it in detail, and every Muslim who has ever learned their deen has at some point sat with a knot in their chest asking the same question: Who is Dajjal, and what does his coming actually mean for us?
The Identity of Dajjal
Dajjal, whose full title is Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal, translates loosely as “the deceiving messiah.” He is a human being, born of a woman, not a supernatural creature in the jinn sense. Yet his abilities will be unlike anything the world has ever seen. According to authentic hadith narrated by both Bukhari and Muslim, he will appear near the end of times as a one-eyed man, with the Arabic letters “K-F-R” (disbeliever) written between his eyes—visible to every believer who encounters him.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said there has been no prophet sent since Nuh (AS) except that they warned their people about Dajjal. This alone tells you the scale of what we are talking about.
What Makes Him So Dangerous
The signs of Dajjal are not subtle. He will command the rain, and it will rain. He will command the earth, and it will yield crops. He will call to the dead, and they will seemingly rise. He will carry what appears to be a river of water and a river of fire, yet in reality, what looks like fire will be cool water, and what looks like water will be burning. This is the essence of his deception: nothing will be what it appears.
His greatest tool is fitna, trial through illusion. He will appeal to people’s hunger, their grief, and their desire for comfort and certainty. He will claim to be your provider, your savior, and eventually your god. The signs of Dajjal leading up to his emergence include widespread moral decay, people abandoning prayer, dishonesty becoming ordinary, and the blurring of truth and falsehood across every level of society.
Where Will He Appear and Who Will Follow Him
He will emerge from the east, somewhere between Iraq and Syria, according to various narrations, and he will travel across the earth rapidly. Makkah and Madinah are two places he will not be able to enter. Angels will guard those cities. The believing Muslims who hold firm will find refuge in their faith, but the majority of his followers, according to the Prophet (PBUH), will be those who already have weak connections to authentic knowledge.
How to Protect Yourself
The Prophet (PBUH) gave specific protection. Memorize and recite the first and last ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf. Make dua for refuge from the trials of Dajjal in every prayer. Strengthen your relationship with the Quran and seek authentic Islamic knowledge consistently. Those who know their deen, who fast, who pray with presence, and who understand the signs of Dajjal as taught by the Prophet (PBUH) will recognize him immediately for what he is.
Who is Dajjal at his core? He is the ultimate test of where your heart truly stands. He is proof that faith grounded in knowledge and sincere worship is the only armor that holds.
His End
Dajjal’s reign will be short. Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, peace be upon him) will descend near the white minaret in Damascus, and when Dajjal sees him, he will dissolve like salt in water. No army will be needed. Just one breath of truth in the face of the greatest deception the world will have ever known.
