Muhammad (PBUH): A Role Model for Humanity
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saw many hardships in his life from birth. His father passed away before his birth. He was very young when his mother and grandfather passed away too—such hard times turned him into a mature boy since childhood. That was very unusual for the Arabs in those days when they were plunged into the darkness of ignorance. He grew up to become a model of excellence for all. There are countless lessons from his life to practice in today’s world.
Strong Character
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a man of exceptional character. From a young age, he was known for his modesty and chastity. He would never raise his gaze in front of a woman. Despite belonging to one of Makkah’s most respected and influential families, he led a simple life. Even before prophethood, he refrained from vices that were common in Arab society at the time.
One of the most important lessons from the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is his nobility. He was affectionate towards children. He treated women with respect. In his last sermon, he declared rights for daughter in matters of marriage, inheritance, and other important issues. Before Islam female infanticide was common. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declared it as a grave sin. He declared daughters as blessings of Allah. He proclaimed rights even for animals and trees. When Muslims went for Jihad he strictly prohibited Muslims from cutting trees, hurting animals, children, women, or anyone not involved in the war. The conquest of Makkah stands as the best example of the most peaceful conquest ever. After Muslims conquered Makkah, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declared pardon to everyone who sought refuge at the house of Abu Sufyan. He even forgave Hind who got his favorite uncle, Hazrat Hamza killed. He set the best example of strong character, resilience, and temperament.
Honesty
Since the beginning, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known for his honesty and truthfulness. Even his enemies testified about his honesty. From a young age, he started overseeing trade with his uncle. His reputation as an honest trader spread everywhere. Hazrat Khadija was a rich businesswoman during those days. She wanted someone to oversee her business. She was so impressed by Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) nobility and character that she offered to marry him. He defied societal taboos such as marrying an older widowed woman. Hence he set a great example for Muslims to follow.
Humility
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) displayed a humble character. He met everyone with utmost respect and humility. He ate simple food. He never talked in a loud voice. He never laughed loudly. He was compassionate towards his enemies. Whenever a problem or issue came up, he would consult all his companions. During the Battle of Trench, he followed the advice of Hazrat Salman Farsi (RA) although his companions seemed skeptical about his suggestion. He always supported those in need. His conduct taught his followers important lessons of brotherhood and unity. Seeing his excellent character, even his worst enemies turned into his staunch followers.
Steadfastness
Allah tested Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) severely throughout his life. From a young age, he lost his beloveds one by one. When he started preaching Islam the pagans of Makkah made life miserable for him to the extent that they drove him out of his hometown. Allah tested him with the grief of losing his infant sons. Despite all the hardships, he remained steadfast on the righteous path. He never gave up on his mission of spreading the word of Allah. His conviction and faith in Allah are one of the most important lessons for Muslims today.
